About Plate Heat Exchangers
A plate heat exchanger is a device designed to transfer heat between fluids of varying pressures. Plate exchangers are an effective way of regulating temperatures, heating and cooling of a variety of liquids. A plate heat exchanger transfers heat between fluids using different plates as hot and cold mediums. They are the most common form of heat exchanger used in a variety of industrial applications.
Ultra-Therm plate heat exchangers are available in two varieties: gasket plate heat exchangers and brazed plate heat exchangers.
A gasket plate heat exchanger is a popular type of plate heat exchanger, which consists of corrugated gasket plates placed between two frames to transfer heats between liquids.
Working Principle of a Plate Heat Exchanger
A plate heat exchanger consists of a frame, which consists of a front frame, rear (movable) frame, carrying bar, guiding bar, and a number of tie bolts depending on the type of the plate heat exchanger. In between front and rear frame, a number of plates that are pressed together sealed by a rubber gasket. The plate pack is placed between the two frames, it is tightened to a minimum distance which allows the plate heat exchanger to be operated under certain pressures. The heat is transferred from one medium to another one through the plates. The hot and cold medium flows between each of the plates and then they exchange their heat without mixing each other.
One of the most important parts of the plate heat exchangers is the plate itself. The plates are pressed from various materials such as stainless steel 304, stainless steel 316, SMO grade stainless, Hastelloy or pure titanium. Each plate is specially designed with pressed corrugations creating turbulence to achieve the highest possible heat transfer rates. The material of the plates depends on the medium passing through the plate heat exchanger. It is very important that the medium must be suitable for the plate material otherwise aggressive mediums can damage and corrode the plates. Thickness of the plates differ depending on the type of plate heat exchanger application and working pressure. The plate thickness range between 0.4mm and 1mm.
